<image:title>Home - the untold story.</image:title>
<image:caption>Unfortunately, most of the narratives surrounding 9/11 rescue and recovery erased the important work of DSNY and the role of Sanitation Workers as first responders. The countless labors and life saving work of DSNY isn’t only invisible during times of tragedy and disaster. It’s often gone unnoticed on a regular basis. Given the necessary and important task of managing, organizing, sorting, and transporting waste, for the sake of public health and safety, it’s time for the untold stories of DSNY to be shared. a new chapter</image:caption>

<image:caption>This image features the view of the Manhattan skyline from atop Section 1/9 , the final resting place of the remains of the WTC site. It is imperative to highlight the care and respect with which DSNY approached these materials and also honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. As Freshkills Park is brought to life, it is important to emphasize the rich history and immense beauty of the land that those remains are now a part of.</image:caption>

<image:title>fresh kills - On March 22, 2001, Fresh Kills Landfill received its last barge of residential solid waste. Nearly six months later, on the fifth of September, the City of New York—in partnership with the Municipal Art Society, New York State Department of State, New York City Department of Sanitation, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs—announced the International Design Competition for Freshkills Park to source ideas for the planning and design phases of the long term landfill-to-park project for the 2,200-acre site.</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 45% of the 2,200-acre site is composed of four landfill mounds, the landscape of Freshkills has been engineered with layers of soil and undergone various infrastructural changes to transform the site into the lush, biodiverse landscape it is today. But the journey from landfill-to-park took a dramatic turn on September 11, 2001. Thanks to the careful and tireless work of the New York City Department of Sanitation before, during, and after 9/11 recovery, the final resting place of the remains of the World Trade Center site are at home with thriving flora and flourishing fauna. Read on to learn more about DSNY’s role in recovery.</image:caption>
